Summary
A carved, wooden and painted decorative escutcheon with a Bacchic mask, swags and shell ornamentation, converted into a hatstand post 1940 by Trekkie Parsons, partner of Leonard Woolf. Previously the property of Virginia Woolf. Possibly 17th Century, Italian.
Provenance
Carved wooden escutcheon, unknown date and maker, purchased by Virginia Woolf prior to 1940, possibly for her writing lodge at Monk’s House, Rodmell. Given after her death by Leonard Woolf to Trekkie Parsons. Subsequently, given by Trekkie Parsons to Douglas Brewer in 1952, and subsequently inherited by his widow in 2018. Donated to the National Trust in 2023 for display at Monk’s House.
