Summary
Corner fireplace and overmantle, the fireplace has brick cheeks and an iron fire back featuring strapwork and scrollwork featuring the date '1894' in a central roundel, the fireplace is flanked with carved female figures. The overmantle is curved at sides with renaissance motifs surrounding a central panel framing an oil painting on canvas, A Bull leaping a Fence by Eugène Joseph Verboeckhoven (Warneton 1799 - Brussels 1881. The central frame for the inset painting features the initials: WWA and date 1893. Fireplace has brick cheeks and an iron fire back featuring strapwork and scrollwork featuring the date '1894' in a central roundel. Originally in dark wood, the fireplace and paneling in this room were painted.
Provenance
Presented to the National Trust, with the house and grounds, by Waldorf, 2nd Viscount Astor (1879-1952) in 1942.
