Summary
East Fernery south elevation oversail to the gates. Panel 13: Gate Oversail Central cartouche comprising of a shield showing the date 1895, surrounded by two thick fish-tailed scrolled pieces accompanied by two fluted and chased flat top pillars. On top of the shield is a cast vase finial with 1 double-handed acanthus leaves cascading from the top, with two forged organic forms lightly hooked around, both opposing fish-tail scrolls with spherical forged details seen towards the later curve of the scrolls. The shield is sat upon a stand made up of two opposing fire-welded fish-tail scrolls adorned with riveted-on acanthus and water leaves. The center shows round swaged finial and central pieces ribboning around it. Repousse Griffin head with floral chain leading from central scrollwork to the Griffin’s mouth. Fire-welded fish-tailed snub-end scroll work surrounding griffin’s head, adorned with repousse acanthus leaves and organic water leaved finials used as scroll spacers. Some scroll work uses collars to join two pieces together and some forged square corners are used throughout to create dramatic changes of direction (seen to left and right of vase finial)
