In 1696, eight years after Buckingham's death, Cliveden was bought by Lord George Hamilton, who later became 1st Earl of Orkney. Lord Orkney was succeeded by his daughter Anne, who married the 4th Earl of Inchiquin. After her father's death in 1737, Anne let Cliveden to Frederick, Prince of Wales who held it until his death in 1751. After this, Cliveden passed to Anne's daughter Mary, who married her cousin, the 5th Earl of Inchiquin. After the fire of 1795, the house remained derelict and was sold in 1824 to Sir George Warrender. Between 1824 and 1893 it changed hands three times by purchase, passing successively to the 2nd Duke of Sutherland in 1849, the 1st Duke of Westminster in 1869 and the 1st Viscount Astor in 1893. In 1942 the estate was presented to the National Trust by the 2nd Viscount Astor, whose family, however. continued to reside there until 1966. In the published return of owners of land in 1873 the Duke of Westminster is recorded as holding 246 acres in Bucks."
