Summary

Sculpture, marble, George Granville Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 2nd Duke of Sutherland, KG, DCL (1786-1861) by Matthew Noble (Hackness 1818 – London 1876). 1866. He stands draped with a heavy cloak over his right shoulder, his right leg out, while head is turned half left. He holds a plan of Cliveden in his right hand. Statue placed on square pedestal, with Latin inscription extolling the Duke.

Provenance

Commissioned from Noble by the Sutherland family, date on pedestal is 1865, a bronze version of exists at the Sutherland home at Dubrobin in the Highlands of Scotland. The example at Cliveden passed with the Estate, first to the 1st Duke of Westminster, then to William Waldorf, 1st Viscount Astor. It was presented to the National Trust, with the house and grounds, by Waldorf, 2nd Viscount Astor (1879-1952) in 1942.

Marks and inscriptions

On Pedestal: "Caro ac semper colendo nomini, Georgio Sutherlandiae, Duci II/aequo forti benigno pio/ Hanc statuam viduae consorti dono dedit/Georgius Sutherlandiae Dux III/Qui amore indefesso patris abrepto/Matri Praesidium/Immo vita Subvenit/ Natus est Octavo Dic Mens Maii MDCCCXXIII/Obdormivit in Christo vicesimo octavo Dic Mens Febr MDCCCLXI Translation - For the dear and always to be protected/cultivated (gentleman) by name George Sutherland just, brave, kind and pious. George Sutherland, the Third Duke, gave this statue to his widow, sharer of his property, with tireless love of his father who, having been taken away from the protection of his mother, came to her aid in living her life. Born on the eighth day in the month of August 1786. Married on the eighth day in the month of August 1822. Fell asleep in Christ on the eighth day in the month of February 1861.
