Summary
Marble sculpture, Esquiline Venus. Nineteenth-century replica of 1st century BC /early 1st century AD statue. Marble square base. She stands against a draped pedestal, her arms missing but left hand fingers still attached to her head, across which are bands. She stands on her right leg, the left one slightly bent. Note - 'Esqualine Venus', Rome, Palazzo dei Conservatori 37 incorporates elements of the mid 5th century BC 'severe style'. Details of the support suggest that she is either a priestess of Isis, despite her modern name, or possibly Isis herself in her manifestation as Aphrodite.
