Summary
Lady Astor's bed; oak inlaid and carved panel canopy bed with two turned, leaf and floral carved bulbous pillar supports, square at base. Foot carved with figures of Adam and Eve, two caryatids and Atlantes panels, grape and vine surround. The head with figures and arched surround, four set back figure carved pilasters and moulded panels. Upholstered base. Springs. Formerly Garage Store
Provenance
Bought by Captain Harry Lindsay on behalf of Waldorf Astor, later 2nd Viscount Astor for the bedroom of Nancy Astor. A note from Astor to Miss Crawford states that 'the bed in the Elizabethan Room came from 'Strangeways Hall' and was purchased by Capt. L from W. M. Dearrman. South King St. Manchester for £150. The bed was presented to the National Trust, with the house and grounds, by Waldorf, 2nd Viscount Astor (1879-1952) in 1942.
