Summary
Iron metal 'tin' with painted enameled label and lid containing Stockholm Tar. The iron metal container has become corroded and has a separate push down lid which is slightly distorted and does not sit flat. The label is of a yellow ochre background with simple black print depicting a mountain scene at the top in a single lined oval and a checkered band following the rim. Another checkered band follows the base with a single line border above and below the band and the words 'STOCKHOLM TAR' in between. The back of the label has 'STOCKHOLM TAR' in the center in smaller text than the front and an empty box shape breaking the checkered band at the bottom. The weight is printed in a box at the top '.1lb' at the top breaking the checkered band. Pine tar is used as a preservative for wood which may be exposed to harsh conditions, including outdoor furniture and ship decking and rigging. The high-grade pine tar used in this application is often called Stockholm Tar since, for many years, a single company held a royal monopoly on its export out of Stockholm, Sweden. Pine tar is also used as a veterinary care product. It is a traditional antiseptic and hoof care product for horses and cattle. Pine tar has been used when chickens start pecking to avoid damage.
