Caption above: EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY : THE 350TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS Top Picture, THE COMMEMORATION SERVICE.---The 350th anniversary of the foundation of the University of Edinburgh was marked by a number of impressive ceremonies during the week-end, the most , and this picture was taken by a staff photographer of The Times during the service. Sir George Adam Smith, principal of Aberdeen University, preached the sermon. The celebrations began on Friday evening, when about a thousand guests attended a reception given by the Corporation of Edinburgh. Bottom Picture, IN THE M'EWAN HALL.---The scene in the M'Ewan Hall as Sir James Barrie, Chancellor of Edinburgh University, was conferring the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws upon Sir James Crichton-Browne, the oldest living graduate of the University. The distinguished company, which included representatives of learned societies and other universities, heard a characteristic address by Sir James Barrie, and the Archbishop of Canterbury, who received the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity, also addressed the gathering. Centre right Picture, SIR JAMES BARRIE, the Chancellor of Edinburgh University, is seen in the centre of this group, photographed on the steps of St. Giles' after the commemoration service. On his right is General Sir Ian Hamilton, Rector of the University, and on his left is Sir Thomas Holland, Principal of the University. Bottom right Picture, EDINBURGH CASTLE as it appeared on Saturday night, when it was flood-lit as part of the University anniversary celebrations. A torchlight procession by the students was another spectacular feature of the proceedings. .
