Summary
One of a series of six mainly whole pages from newspapers. Subject: 'The Chesterfield Canal'. A whole page of newspaper from the "Worksop Guardian" dated 'Friday, October 21st, 1960'. Pages 7 and 8. There is a black and white photograph of a long boat with a large group of children. The caption reads: "We are indebted to Mrs. Hudson. 156, Wilford Lane, West Bridgford, for the loan of this photograph. She says: "I remember Mr. Clark taking us for a picnic to Green Mile. We were drawn by a grand horse. The pic- ture was taken at Pickering Lock, Bracebridge." 'Under Working Conditions BY NARROW-BOAT ALONG OUR CANAL FIFTH ARTICLE By EARNEST CLARK If you stand for a moment on the Canal Bridge, at the approach to Victoria Square, you will see Worksop Lock. Neatly pointed copings, tarred and painted gates, carefully weeded surround, and a lovely British Waterways Not- ice Board. It was no favourite with Boatmen. Hemmed in all round walls, buildings, and the high iron parapet of the old bridge it was a dark and dreary place for most of the year. ...'
