Summary
1 of 128 Newspaper Cuttings; Subject - Windmills (plus a few watermills and a dovecote). A newspaper cutting taken from 'THE TIMES AUGUST 9 1955' newspaper page 10. Page 10 has a small black and white photograph of a windmill titled APPEAL TO SAVE OLD WINDMILL - HIGHEST IN SOUTH OF ENGLAND. Caption underneath; The windmill at Cranbrook. The text above and below the picture: There are admirers of the windmill at Cranbrook, Kent, who claim that it is probably the finest mill in the country. Union Mill, as it is called, was built in 1814 for Henry Dobell, a relation (it is believed a brother) of Sidney Dobell the critic and author. few mills in the south of England approach Cranbrook in size and no other is so high...........................................Unlike the majority of windmills in this country, Cranbrook Mill is not obsolete, but can still work according to the proper function, turning mannerly in the wind, with that slow gravity of revolving sails........................If the necessary sum for the preservation of the mill is raised and the repairs are carried out, Kent County Council have agreed to accept financial responsibility for future maintenance.........................................
