Summary
1 of 128 Newspaper Cuttings; Subject - Windmills (plus a few watermills and a dovecote). A newspaper cutting with an article from THE TIMES JULY 10 1954. Caption ; SAVING THE OLD WINDMILLS - MERIT CERTIFICATE FOR COUNTY BY OUR SPECIAL CORESPONDENT Underneath; Age and decay have so shorn the English landscape of its windmills that of the 10,000 which stood in their heyday to grind "by God's fair air" only the remains of probably fewer than 1,500 can be seen today, and of these fewer than 50 are still working. Several counties have taken steps to preserve mills of exceptional interest and Essex, notably, has been awarded a certificate of merit by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings for its work in this connection. West Sussex once contained many mills ...................... Of some 26 mills or their remains in West Sussex, three, each of a different type, are said to be worthy of preservation. They are at High Salvington (Worthing), Halnaker, and Shipley. The last named adjoined the home of Mr. Hilaire Belloc, who was also associated with Halnaker mill................................ The tower mill at Halnaker was built between 1700 and 1750, probably during the reign of Queen Anne. It was last worked about 1900................ The mill was restored externally in in 1934 by Sir William Bird as a memorial to his wife. During the Second World War it was used as an observer post because of its prominent position, and its present poor shape is the result of neglect and vandalism during the war...................
