Summary
1 of 128 Newspaper Cuttings; Subject - Windmills (plus a few watermills and a dovecote). A newspaper cutting of a picture of a windmill on the top right hand side. Caption above; FEN WINDMILL IN DANGER £2,000 NEEDED FOR REPAIRS The windmill at Haddenham, a landmark in the Fens standing at 120ft above sea level, may become a dangerous structure if it is not repaired soon. Experts who have examined the mill in company with an official of the Ancient Monuments Department of the Ministry of Works (cont. underneath the picture) estimate that it would cost about £2,000 to put it into a sound condition. The mill was last in use about nine years ago and is still owned by the miller who worked it then. The mill is on the list of buildings of historic interest in the Isle of Ely and has been scheduled as such under the Town and Country Planning Act. The county council have it in their power to make a preservation order, but this would have to be confirmed by the Minister of Housing and Local Government and it is not considered likely, locally, that he would make a grant of the sum necessary for the mill's preservation. ...... The windmill was built in 1803. Mr. P. G. Norman, secretary to the Friends of Haddenham, in a letter to The Times says that its machinery and sails are intact and the mill is not repair.
