Summary
One of a series of newspaper cuttings. 'Rev. John Goulton (curate at St. John's, Worksop 1902-1909) and St. Philip with St. Luke, Pennyfoot Street, Nottingham (church built (financed) by Thomas Admas, born Worksop 1807)'. Numbers 22/1 - 22/12. A single cutting from the 'EVENING POST AND NEWS, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1963'. Pages 9 and 10. 'EDITOR'S LETTER BAG... ... FITTING MEMORIAL It was most gratifying to read Mr. Arthur Hobson's suggestion that a memorial be considered to the memory of our late Vicar, the Rev. John Goulton, preferably to be in the Sneinton area. In fact, a similar proposal was placed before the Church Parochial Council some months ago and most warmly received by them, but when the pro- position was placed before Mr. Goul- ton's family, it was thought hardly suitable on the grounds that Mr. Goulton personally would not have wished it. Their feeling can easily be understood when one recalls Mr. Goulton's simplicity and lack of self- opinion. Only one desire was ever in his mind and that for the church to remain unimpaired. It is fairly obvious that plans for the site on which the church stood have been under negotiation for a much longer period than most people imagine, and I am of the opinion that this site can no longer be considered as having any connection with St. Philip's Church. It is a sad thought throughout the whole of the diocese not another St. Philip's Church exists, nor does there seem any intention of this being remedied. I would like to remind Mr. Hobson that the site on which St. Philip's Vicarage stood has now been cleared and sold to the City Council for £4,000 ; and as the property as a whole was subscribed by local people, what could be more fitting than that old people's flats similar in type to the Plumptre Almshouses - of which Mr. Goulton was chaplain for so many years - be erected there, and how appropriate that they should be known as the John Goulton Homes. With his great love for the aged and infirm I feel sure that this would have given him great joy, and be a most worthy memorial. C. A. WILSON Churchwarden 103, Port Arthur-road, Nottingham.'.
