'History lessons... from the air Looking down on a city landmark Looking down on Nottingham Castle and its 133ft.-high rock. The Castle, once a mighty fortress that had dominated the area for almost 600 years, was partly burned and partly demolished in 1651 after the Civil War. The site was pur- chased by the 1st Duke of Newcastle in 1674 and a new castle built. Reform Bill supporters set it on fire in 1831. Restored, it became the first provincial museum of the fine and applied arts. Scaffolding can be seen on the south face where contractors are working to make the rock safer.
