One Christmas-time Mr. Pickwick and three other friends boarded the Muggleton Coach, well-wrapped against the cold in great-coats, shawls, and comforters. The horse burst into a canter and the bugle played a lively air as the coach rattled through the streets of a country town. At last they reached Dingley Dell. Mr Pickwick and his friends jumped down and walked briskly to their destination, Manor Farm. What warmth and cordiality was in their reception. This would be a holiday indeed! The rooms at manor Farm were trimmed with holly and evergreens. In the sitting- room the carpet was up, the candles burned bright, and a great fire blazed and crackled on the hearth. Mr. Pickwick was the life of the party. His speckled silk stockings and smartly tied pumps flashed in and out as he danced and danced. At last he stopped for breath under the mistletoe and was promptly kissed on the chin, nose and spectacles! The story follows on the right hand page which is also illustrated by pictures from the story: On the bottom right handwritten in blue ink PTO Back - Handwritten in blue ink To Mr Straw with Christmas Greetings & best wishes from the Rice-Oxleys.
