Arthur Sanderson, 1829–1882, founded A. Sanderson & Sons in 1860 in Islington, London. He began by importing French wallpapers and following several moves of premises he established a factory of his own in Chiswick in 1879. The building boom in Britain in the 1880s increased the demand for affordable wallpapers and Sandersons expanded. In 1892 a four-storey factory was built in Chiswick, later expanded in 1902 to a design by Charles Voysey. By this time the company was exporting its products to the British Colonies and the United States. Following a devastating fire in 1928 a new factory was built in 80 acres of land in Perivale. This state-of-the-art factory, which produced wallpaper until 1975 was described in the press as "the finest wallpaper mill in the world…a magnificent factory flanked by gardens and playing fields…a glimpse of a new ideal in industry." After Arthur Sanderson's death, the business was taken over by his three sons, John, Arthur Bengough and Harold, becoming a limited company in 1900. Under their leadership, staff increased from 40 to 300 and the first printing machine was joined by seven more. In 1919 the firm established a textile printing factory in Uxbridge and began to produce its own range of fabrics, which had been commission-printed since 1914. These were first called Eton Rural Cretonnes then Eton Rural Fabrics and finally Sanderson Fabrics. In 1924 Arthur Bengough Sanderson received a Royal Warrant as "Purveyor of Wallpapers and Paints" to King George V.
