Caption
A sampler was something girls used to create to show their proficiency with a needle, so rather than creating a nice picture of a landscape or scene, they’d render a range of numbers and letters. Running through the alphabet and numbers was common place demonstrating literacy, as was embroidering the creators name. Florence has also included a range of animals and birds using various stitches as well as her age and the year she created it demonstrating her ability to make and mend clothes for any suitable husbands.
