Caption
Without the benefit of modern central heating in homes it would have been rather cold! Extra layers were necessary, particularly in a room such as a bathroom, or where two or more walls led straight to the outside, and there is no fire to be lit to provide warmth. Housecoats and dressing gowns were essential wear, both for the warmth and the modesty that they provided.
Summary
Red/crimson woollen/flannelette lady's housecoat, high neck with decorative ruffle, cape style collar with same decorative ruffle and red embroidered detail to edge, decorative ruffle along button hole edge with seven pearlised buttons.
Provenance
Straw collection bequeathed to The National Trust on the death in 1990 of William Straw.
