Caption
The company "Banks, Son & Co’ began in 1832 in Cumberland producing stationery and art materials. In 1938, the company established the Derwent brand of coloured pencils designed for artists, named after the lake Derwent Water near their factory. Initially, the company released a line of 24 pencil colours, which expanded to 72 colours a year later.
