Summary
Painting, watercolour and bodycolour and ink on paper, armorial bearings of the Ludlow of Hill Deverell family, early 19th century. The painting on front shows a chevron and three martin heads (black/white) on an escutcheon and a helm with a half martin, on the reverse, handwritten, Ludlow of Hill Deverell. Arms. Argent a Cheveron between three Martins heads erased Sable. Crest. A demi Martin rampant Sable. Inscribed on the reverse, probably in the hand of Sir Richard Colt Hoare, 2nd Baronet FRS, Hundred of Heytesbury.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust along with Stourhead House, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
