Summary
Painting, watercolour and bodycolour and ink on paper, armorial bearings of the Hoare of Stourton family, early 19th century. The painting on front shows a double-headed eagle (white/black) on an escutcheon and a helm of an eagle's head, on the reverse, handwritten, Hoare of Stourton. Arms. Sable an Eagle displayed with two heads Argent on the breast an Ermine Spot within a bordure engrailed of the Second. Crest. On a Wreath of Colours an Eagle's Head erased Argent charged with an Ermine Spot. Inscribed on the reverse, probably in the hand of Sir Richard Colt Hoare, 2nd Baronet FRS, Hundred of Mere.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust along with Stourhead House, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
