Summary
A marquetry inlaid and cross banded mahogany, tulipwood, purplewood and maple, gilt brass mounted serpentine side cabinet, English, part late 18th century with extensive alterations. The associated shaped top with cross banded edge and gilt brass applied band above a pair of shaped cupboard doors, each inlaid with circular panels with guilloche borders and marquetry floral sprays within a shaped border with scrolled inlaid spandrels. The doors opening to reveal an interior with a pair of frieze drawers above two shelves. The drawers and inside doors veneered in burr walnut and flanked by gilt brass mounts with ribbon cast edges and joining splayed legs with gilt brass floral sabot. Bearing a paper label to the interior 'FRANCO-BRITISH EXHIBITION, 1908. LOAN COLLECTION (DECORATIVE ART SECTION) LENT BY SIR HENRY HOARE'. Extensive alterations, constructed from 18th century elements, probably in the late 19th century.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust along with Stourhead House, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
