Summary
Watercolour on paper, Papillons Noirs by St George Hare (Limerick 1857 – London 1933). Half-length seated female, profile to right, her right hand holding a locket hung from her neck, a butterfly resting on her right wrist and others flying on the left. Signed, bottom left: HARE Perhaps a portrait of Lady Hoare. Inscribed by Alda, Lady Hoare, in ink on a piece of paper stuck to the back-board: "Papillons-noirs" - / i.e. / "Blue-Devils". / The idea for this picture was taken from a description of mine of / Feby.14th 1907 - & painted in a fortnight, / was exhibited Royal Institute [of] Painters in / Water-Colours on March 14th / 07 - where it / made a great Success - the leading artists / praising [it] most highly. Henry, & I, went to [the] Private / View that day, with St George Hare, to see it. - We purchased / it {the] following May. A.H.
