Black chalk, heightened with white, on paper, Charles Bowles (1766-1837) by Stephen Catterson Smith the elder (Skipton 1806 – Dublin 1872). 1828. Inscribed: Charles Bowles Esqr. 1828. Three-quarter length portrait, seated, holding a paper entitled 'Chalk Hundred'. Bowles wrote the article on Chalk Hundred in Sir Richard Colt Hoare's 1822 History of Modern Wiltshire (Hundred of Mere)
