Black chalk drawing heightened with white on paper, John Gage, later Rokewode (1786-1842) by Stephen Catterson Smith the elder (Skipton 1806 – Dublin 1872).Inscribed (In Richard Colt Hoare's hand): Johannes Gage Amicus 1829. A three-quarter length portrait of a seated man, the antiquary, who took the name Rokewode when he succeeded to its estates in 1838, was chairman of the Society of Antiquaries from 1828 until his death in 1842. He published topographical works on Suffolk. In wooden frame.
