Summary
A pair of tripod vases or incense burners, Rosso Antico (red unglazed stoneware with black applied decoration), Wedgwood, Staffordshire, circa 1805 - 1815. Shape No. 255 decorated with an upper band of floral medallions, the lower part with acanthus foliage alternating with lily-stems. The legs of the tripod with guilloche decoration and a leaf border to the base, terminating in lions' masks. Unmarked.
Provenance
Probably acquired by Sir Richard Colt Hoare, 2nd Baronet (1758-1838). Listed in the 1902 Inventory in the Small Dining Room as 'The set of six fine old Wedgwood ornament, consisting of: One pair of 6½ in. Triangular urns; One pair of 4½ in. Spills (1 broken); One pair of 6 in. urns with covers on tripod dolphins.' Bequeathed to the National Trust along with Stourhead House, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
