Summary
Vase, black basalt (stoneware), Wedgwood, Staffordshire, circa 1769 - 1775. Shape No. 1 with two handles terminating in satyr masks, a garland and pedestal base. Unmarked. The shape of the vase is based on a design by Joseph Marie Vien (1716 - 1809) in 'Suite de Vases Composée dans le Goût de l'Antique', published 1760.
Provenance
Probably purchased by Henry Hoare II, called 'the Magnificent' (1705-1785) in 1770. The 'Ledger Extracts from the Accounts of Henry Hoare II, 1749 - 70' records a payment on 2 May 1770 'By Mr Wedgwood for vases...£7 9s 6d'. Thence by descent. Bequeathed to the National Trust along with Stourhead House, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
