Summary
A pair of vases, black basalt (stoneware) with encaustic paint, Wedgwood, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, circa 1770. Of bell krater shape with two handles raised on a pedestal base, painted with Classical figures. Unmarked. The decoration is taken from illustrations in Sir William Hamilton and Pierre-Francois Hugues d'Hancarville, 'Collection of Etruscan, Greek and Roman Antiquities from the Cabinet of the Honourable William Hamilton' (1767). Henry Hoare II, called 'the Magnificent', purchased all volumes of Hamilton in 1770.
Provenance
Purchased by Henry Hoare II, called 'the Magnificent' (1705-1785), probably the vases listed in his ledger, 4 August 1770, for payment 'by Mr Wedgwood for 2 Hamilton Vases...£5 5 shillings.' Painted by John Buckler in the Dining Room at Stourhead, 24 May 1824 (British Library Add.MS 36392. f,155). Listed in the ‘Inventory of Heirlooms at Stourhead directed to be taken by the Will of the late Sir Richard Colt Hoare Bart.’, 1838, in the Dining Parlour, as one of ‘A pair of Wedgwood Vases 8 inches high.' Listed in the 'Inventory of Furniture, Bedding, Carpets, China, Plate, Pictures, Curios, and other effects on the premises of the mansion,' January 1908, in the Cabinet Room, as ‘Pair of 8" Wedgwood side handled jars.' Bequeathed by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947), 1946.
