Caption
Colt Hoare was a prolific amateur artist and produced a huge number of sketches recording the places he visited on his Grand Tour. For a while he was accompanied on his travels by John ‘Warwick’ Smith who taught him to draw.

Provenance
Given to the National Trust along with Stourhead House, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
