Summary
Rattan hunting crop with bone handle, a brass band inscribed 'AVSY 1922', leather strap.
Provenance
Over 100 years ago, Parson Jack Russell, Vicar of Swimbridge, near Barnstaple, officiated at the wedding of Lord and Lady Rocksavage and was presented with this hunting crop inscribed 'J.R. from R. July 1879'. Lord Rocksavage succeeded to the marquisate of Cholmondeley and became Lord Great Chamberlain for the reign of King Edward VII, who, as Prince of Wales, stayed at Dunster Castle, also in 1879. On giving up hunting, Jack Russell gave the crop to Margaret Luttrell, daughter of the Rev. A.H.F. Luttrell, Vicar of Minehead for 66 years, and widow of her cousin Capt. John Luttrell R.N. In 1922 Mrs. Luttrell who was a keen follower of the hunt, passed it on to her grandson, Lieutenant Andrew Yates R.N. who, having shortened it by 4 inches (102 mm) to suit current fashion, carried it with many packs of Staghounds and Foxhounds up to 1939.
