Summary
Pencil on paper (oil to be mixed with the paint has left dark stains), Study for the altarpiece (a variation of Dug-Out), with subsidiary vignettes, a predella piece, predella moulding and two spandrel scenes (recto); Studies for mules and landscape elements (verso) by Sir Stanley Spencer, CBE, RA (Cookham 1891– Cliveden 1959), 1932. The side walls and floor projecting from this central piece suggests that this was another initial idea for the altarpiece. Like the early Resurrection sketch (719806), which this study must pre-date, Spencer has used the Giottesque format of framing the scene with subsidiary vignettes and landscape features in the spandrels above. This scene was adapted into an arched canvas for the North Wall, adjacent to the altar, with the soldiers looking towards the promise of the Resurrection. On the verso Spencer has again outlined a profile piece of predella moulding, a preoccupation in many of his drawings. He was closely involved in the architectural design of the chapel from the beginning.
