Limestone sculpture, with traces of red paint and gesso, on walnut bracket, King Edward III (1312–1377), English School, circa 1525/30. A stone head of Edward III, also called the Head of God the Father. The head is a relic from the first Chantry Chapel at The Vyne.
Provenance
Probably for the chapel of the Holy Trinity, to the south of the Holy Ghost Chapel in Basingstoke built by Lord Sandys of The Vyne in 1524;brought to The Vyne in the 17th century after the dereliction of the chapel; bequeathed with The Vyne, estate and contents by Sir Charles Chute, 1st Bt (1879-1956)
