Full description

Deed of 1352 with red seal, in gilt frame. A typescript translation of the deed is pasted on the back of the frame. It reads: Norman French Deed of Sir Fulk de Cowdray dated 1352 Releasing the manor of Sherborne Cowdray to R. de Burton Sealed with the seal of Fulk de Cowdray To all to whose sight or hearing these presents shall come Fulk de Cowdray knight sends greeting. Whereas I have heretofore granted and leased and confirmed by my letters to Sir Robert de Burton Archbishop of Winchester my manor of Sherborne Cowdray in the parish of Sherborne St. John in the county of Southampton to have and to hold to the said Sir Robert and his executors the same manor with all its appurtenances for the term of fifteen years rendering to me and my heirs and my executors a certain sum of money. As in a certain indenture made between the said Sir Robert and me for that purpose is more fully contained. Know that for the good services which the said Sir Robert has done me in time past I wishing more favourably to enlarge his estate in this wise have granted and confirmed by this my writing to Sir Robert and his executors aforesaid the manor of Sherborne Cowdray aforesaid. To have and to hold them without rendering anything to me or mine yearly or being at any charge towards me in time to come. In witness whereof I have to these presents put my seal. Given at London the twentieth day of June in the year of the reign of our lord King Edward the third from the conquest the 85th. Witnesses Thomas de Worting; John Herriard; W. Ballard; W. Arch.; Hugh Belle and others.
