Summary
Handled beer mug/jug of grey/mid-brown salt-glazed Lambeth stoneware early 19th century. Slightly pinched spout; darker grooved upper rim incised with 'Rich Allen at Bodgham' and stamped to left of handle WR (could be subsequent reign). Marked P.70 on base. (see below for documentary evidence)
Provenance
Richard Allen - AMS 5981: East Sussex Record Office (12.iv.1958) (D.267) Deeds of Bodiam Castle Estate 1599 - 1922) EXTRACT: "....the Castle was surrendered by John Tempest on 3.xi.1807 to Ruth Allen, widow. Ruth Allen's only son, Richard, was admitted, on his mother's death (25.vi.1814) on 17.i.1817 as Richard Allen, victualler". NB the jug is unlikely, therefore, to be dated earlier than the year of Richard Allen's admission to the Castle Inn.
