Summary
A ceramic puzzle jug. The jug has a wide octagonal flat base and a bulbous body. The top section of the jug is also octagonal in shape, but has vertical sides which have a scalloped rim and open spout. The scroll shaped handle protrudes above the rim and is attached to the jug near the bottom of the bulbous section. The handle continues inside the jug at this point and is attached to the inside base. The top of the handle has a hole in it as does the base at the point where the jug handle is attached. The jug has a shiny cream glazed appearance, which has crazing over the surface. The edge of the handle has a gold painted trim as does the scalloped rim, base and top of the bulbous section. Underneath the spout in gold decoration is written 'John Lane, Sudbury'. This inscription is surrounded by delicately worked scrolls and foliage motifs, with a gold painted line extending at either side around the back of the jug. The jug has three over-glazed colour painting reserves on it, these are as follows: the first on the right, has a colour picture of two cocks fighting, with one standing and the other on the ground, below is an inscription which reads ' A Knock down Blow'; the second in the middle shows two cocks facing each other and reads ' A Set Too' and the third shows one cock standing with the other slumped over and reads 'The Death'.
