Summary
An eight day English chiming longcase clock in a mahogany case, signed by Maple and Co Ltd, London, c.1909. A large three train, four pillar movement with a dead beat escapement, steel pendulum rod and Harrison's maintaining power. Rack striking and chiming on one hour gong and eight bells or four bells for the quarters. Silvered and engraved brass breakarch dial with 'Chime/Silent' and 'Westminster Chime/Whittington Chime' dials in the arch. Seconds dial and signed 'Maple and Co Ltd, London' in plain silvered dial centre. Blued steel hands. In a solid mahogany case with breakarch hood and pagoda top with pierced sound fret and two ball and spire finials. Brass capped fluted columns to hood and trunk with lozenge panel to the plinth. Engraved silver gilt plate above trunk door marked 'Presented to George Franics Augustus, 8th Baron Vernon, by the tenants, workmen and others of the Sudbury estate on the occasion of his coming of age, 28th Sept, 1909'. The clock was probably made by J.Smith and Sons of Clerkenwell, London.

Vernon collection transferred to the Treasury in 1967 following death of 9th Lord Vernon, and transferred to The National Trust in 1967.
