Summary

Woodcut, in black and white, on green laid paper, Camille Pissarro (1831-1903) by Lucien Pissarro (Paris 1863 - Hewood, Dorset 1944), signed and inscribed in pencil, 8/40 [edition], 1906/27. A bust portrait of the artist Camille Pissarro, in old age. On the reverse is a label which reads: 'Redfern Gallery 27 Old Bond Street W1'. Designed and engraved by Lucien Pissarro on three blocks (a ground tint and two browns). The original blocks are in the Ashmolean Museum. Lucien Pissarro, Camille's son, lived in England and founded the Eragny Press in 1896. He was an influential illustrator and printer. "The two engravings you sent me are excellent and in the right style. Don't bother your head about those who can't understand your type of drawing, let them put themselves in your shoes. Your drawing is actually quite correct, when you have studied and understood it -one step more and it will not be so! Only keep your personality intact! Each of us has his qualities and faults, the important thing is to have many qualities." (Camille Pissarro - Letters to his son Lucien)

Provenance

Label verso, originally purchased by 'Miss Murphy 24/12/27'; given to the Trust as part of the Plas yn Rhiw estate between 1950 and 1966 by the Misses Eileen, Lorna and Honora Keating in memory of their parents, John William and Constance Annie Keating.
