Summary
An early 19th century silver-gilt pair-cased verge watch, John Rivers No.2759, London, with under-painted horn outer case, White enamel dial with Arabic numerals, signed fusee movement with square baluster pillars, in inner case with uncused I.T. maker’s mark, and outer bearing monogram W.S.E., 50mm across. N.b. watches of the late 17th to early 19th centuries were generally pair cased, i.e. they had an inner case, to which the movement was hinged, and an outer case for further protection. The outer case was often decorative, as with this watch. Other modes of decoration include shagreen (sharks’ skin) and repoussé, which is a design (usually classical) punched out from behind in low relief.
