Summary
A beech and canvas military campaign chair, belonging to Field Marshal Sir Archibald Armar Montgomery-Massingberd, GCB, GCVO, KCMG, DL (6 December 1871 – 13 October 1947) probably made in England, circa 1900.Constructed from canvas and beech with leather fastening straps, with turned legs and stretchers, bearing the initials 'A.A.M.'The chair, as an object, is not a particularly exciting nor interesting piece of furniture. Military campaign chairs of this design and date were commonplace and many have survived in varying conditions. The link however to Massingberd and his distinguished military career gives it importance both in the context of military history and Gunby Hall.
Provenance
Purchased by the National Trust from J. Montgomery-Massingberd in 1990.
