Summary
A pair of marquetry inlaid and rosewood crossbanded amboyna, thuya and gilt brass mounted side cabinets, London, circa 1850. Each with a rectangular top with squared outset corners above frieze inlaid with geometric strap work and centred with a 'Sevres' porcelain medallion painted with the portrait of a lady. The panelled cupboard door below inlaid with further strap work around a medallion inlaid with symbols of the arts and flanked by stop fluted columns joining a plinth base, the whole with applied cast brass mounts and mouldings. These cabinets are of exceptional quality, the choice of veneer, execution of the inlay and the very high standard of construction, point to the workshop of a competent London cabinet maker.
Provenance
Gifted to the National Trust by Field Marshal Sir Archibald and Lady Montgomery Massingberd in 1944.
