Summary
Print, coloured stipple engraving, Unknown man (incorrectly inscribed Phil: Melanchton) (after Hans Holbein the younger) by Conrad Martin Metz (Bonn 1749-1827). Head and shoulder portrait facing half left with cap on head,open neck. Framed and mounted with GUN/D/94. The inscription describing this as a portrait of Philipp Schwarzerd called Melanchthon (1497-1560) has been recognised as incorrect.
Provenance
1944, gifted to the National Trust by Field Marshal Sir Archibald and Lady Montgomery Massingberd.
