Summary
One of the four Stuart miniatures. Prince James Edward Stuart, 'The Old Pretender' (1688-1766), painted in oval on ivory. The prince, half length facing, half left, in full bottom wig, with ermine trimmed scarlet robe and grey coat with gilt trimmings and white stock and a blue order sash. Plain flat rectangular ebony frame with gilt fillet and acorn clasp for hanger. Oval brass plaque on reverse recording the identity of the sitter. The four miniatures, which had been given to Mr Holt by Cardinal York, were bequeathed by him to his sister, Mary Countess of Haddington, and by her to her daughter, Mary, Countess of Rothes, wife of Bennet Langton, who gave them to her second son, Peregrine Langton. - 1944 inventory
