Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour painting on ivory, Lady Henrietta Frances Cole, Lady Grantham, later Countess de Grey (1784-1848) by Emma Eleanora Kendrick (1788 – London 1871) c.1815-1820. Oval. Head and shoulders, facing, head tilted slightly to the right, in 'medieval' clothes (light grey-blue jerkin with black and gold border over a white dress with fold belt): her left hand holds a gold strap supporting a shawl. Grey eyes, curly ginger hair with centre parting, unusually think neck, imperious expression, aged about 30. Tempestuous scumbled greenish background. Reverse of frame engraved, Henrietta Countess de Grey/5th daughter of 1st Earl of Enniskillen/D.1848. Oval. Paired with FLO.MI.473. The watercolour is badly faded but the miniature seems to be unfinished and crudely painted in parts, not surprisingly as Miss Kendrick's work varied in qualityl The sitter is shown in masquerade dress (as a follower of Diana?), but when it was engraved by Cochran and published in La Belle Assemblee in 1825, she was given the conventional dress of the day. Lady Henrietta Frances Cole was the fourth daughter of the 1st Earl of Enniskillen; she married, in 1805, Thomas Philip Weddell, Baron Grantham, later Earl de Grey.
