Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour painting on ivory, Colonel the Hon. Henry Arthur Cole, MP (1809-1890), British (English) School, d.1836-40. Octagonal. Head and shoulders portrait of a young man, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, in a purplish cloak, loose black tie under open collar of white shirt. Light brown eyes, smooth dark hair parted on his right. Newgate frings, aged about 25. Green background. Heny Cole (1809-1890) was the 2nd son of the 2nd Earl of Enniskillen; he was a colonel in the 7th Hussars, and then in the 12th Foot; MP for Enniskillen 1844-1851 and Fermanagh 1855-1880; died unmarried. The portrait can be dated to the late 1830s, when the Newgate frings became popular among young men.
