Summary
Print, aquatint etching, The Thames Tunnel (after Thomas Talbot Bury) by John Harris III (1811-1865). The world's first underwater tunnel was designed by Marc Brunel, father of I.K.Brunel. Built 1825-42 it was intended for use by road traffic, but money to build the approach ramps ran out, and it was only used as a pedestrian tunnel. In 1866 it was bought by The East London Railway Company and is now part of the London Underground system on the Metropolitan line between Wapping and Rotherhithe.
