Summary
Print, chromolithograph, Charing Cross or Hungerford Bridge, c.1865. Opened in 1864 this bridge was designed by Sir John Hawkshaw for the South Eastern Railway to carry the South Eastern Railway over the river to its new West End terminus at Charing Cross, seen on the left. It replaced I.K.Brunel's elegant Hungerford suspension bridge of 1841-5. Two of the brick piers of the old bridge were incorporated into the new one (and can be clearly seen in this print) while its chains were used for the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
