Summary

Edith Teresa Hulton and Mrs Watkins, dressed in formal Red Cross uniform are seated at a gilt table with, from left to right: Lieutenant [Edmondo] di Robilant; Lieutenant General [Francesco] Grazioli and Brigadier General [Herbert] Gordon. Two young officers stand behind them. All the officers are wearing formal military uniform. The room is extremely grand with gilt and silk covered furniture. The floor is covered with ornate oriental carpets. Edith Teresa Hulton (1890-1972), later Lady Berwick, worked as a Red Cross volunteer in a variety of locations in north-east Italy in the Italian war zone during World War I. She married Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick of Attingham (1877-1947) on 30th June 1919 in Venice, Italy. Brigadier Gordon was commanding British Troops in Fiume at the time. In an archived letter dated 18 January 1919 from Teresa to Lord Berwick, she refers to her visit to Fiume with Mrs Watkins to open a Casa del Soldato. An archived letter from Teresa to her Mother written in March 1919 makes reference to her receiving a photograph of the event from General Gordon. Later in the same trip, she and Mrs Watkins were presented with the Croce di Guerra by General Caviglia, probably in Cervignano This photograph is not annotated. However, it is directly related to photograph CMS 610242.20 on page 15 of this album. This loose photograph has been inserted between pages 18 and 19 as it relates directly to a mounted photograph on page 15 of this album from whence the above detail has been sourced.
