Summary
A group of seven colleagues of Edith Teresa Hulton are standing in a line with arms linked on the concrete foundations of what was once the Posto di Ristoro at San Giovanni di Manzano. Behind them is a huge heap of building material, possibly the rubble from the destruction of the building. Four of the group are wearing nurses’ winter uniforms. A soldier is standing in the centre of the group. To the left are two young women wearing long aprons over their dresses. See Markings (2) below for the identities of the group. The Posto di Ristoro at San Giovanni di Manzano was one of a variety of locations in north-east Italy in the Italian war zone during World War I locations where Edith Teresa Hulton (1890-1972), later Lady Berwick, worked as a Red Cross volunteer. She married Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick of Attingham (1877-1947) on 30th June 1919 in Venice, Italy. There is correspondence in the archives from the Gordon Watsons and the Speranza family.
Provenance
8th Lady Berwick collection; bequeathed to the National Trust by Edith Teresa Hulton, Lady Berwick (1890-1972).
