Summary
A monochrome photograph showing a full length image of Edith Teresa Hulton in San Giovanni di Manzano, Italy, photographed on 23rd May 1916. She is wearing a white Red Cross uniform with long white apron and white sunhat. She appears to be either remonstrating with or helping Italian soldiers attempting to cajole two bullocks in the hauling of a wagon which is loaded with several large barrels. There are two Italian officers standing watching. In the background are several small army tents. Two civilians are pushing on the barrels. “S. Giov. Di Manzano” is written in pen beneath the picture. “23-5-1916” is written in pen beneath the location. “taken by Bar.Cavalchini Garofolo, Malta train” is written in ink under both photographs on this page. Photograph Number 20 of 20 photographs, on Page 21 of Edith Teresa Hulton’s Personal Album: Zona di Guerra October 1915 – May 1916 (see CMS Number 610239.1). Edith Teresa Hulton (1890-1972), later Lady Berwick, worked as a Red Cross volunteer in a variety of locations in the Italian war zone during World War I. She married Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick of Attingham (1877-1947) on 30th June 1919 in Venice, Italy.
